Choose connection before a lecture.
Pick a calm moment. “I’ve noticed things seem heavy lately. How are you really doing?” Put away distractions and give them time to answer.
Thank them for telling you.
“I’m glad you told me. I love you, and we can work on this together.” You can listen without endorsing every choice. Avoid ridicule, comparisons, or using Scripture as a weapon.
Ask what would help.
“Would you like me to listen, help think through a next step, or help find someone we can talk to?” Follow up later; one conversation rarely carries everything.
Hold convictions with humility.
Be honest about your Christian beliefs. Read the Bible in context, admit when you do not know an answer, and seek wise counsel. Apologize when your words or actions have caused harm.
Keep responsibility in the right place.
Include your teenager in age-appropriate decisions, but do not make them responsible for your emotional well-being. Bring your own heavier concerns to a trusted adult, pastor, or qualified counselor.
When safety is a concern.
Take talk of suicide, self-harm, abuse, or threats seriously. Ask directly and calmly about safety. If there is immediate danger, an overdose, or urgent medical need, contact emergency services. Stay nearby if you can do so safely and seek human support promptly. Do not promise secrecy about danger.
Choose qualified Christian support.
Ask trusted church leadership for referrals to licensed professionals with adolescent experience. Ask about qualifications, biblical beliefs, family involvement, safeguarding, and confidentiality limits. A pastor can offer spiritual support; some needs also require clinical or medical care.

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.
Listening and self-control are part of putting faith into practice. Taking someone seriously does not mean agreeing with every choice.
